FPBC Community Kitchen Level 1-AM

Feeding South Florida’s 5,000 square foot Community Kitchen is a state-of-the-art multi-purpose kitchen located in Boynton Beach, where meals can be mass-produced and delivered to individuals in our service area.

This is a Level 1 shift (Junior Cooks). Read descriptions below to ensure you are registering for the shift that matches your skill level and past volunteer experience with the Community Kitchen. All first-time volunteers at the Community Kitchen should register for the “Level 1 - Commis” shift.

Level 1 “Commis” (Junior Cooks): Open to all volunteers of all skill levels. - Tasks + skills taught include learning about our equipment, packaging meals, portion requirements, doing dishes, bagging meals for delivery, wrapping pallets, weighing, and emptying trash, sweeping.

Level 2 “Chef de Partie” (Chef of the Group): Open to volunteers that have completed 10 Level 1 shifts. - Tasks + skills taught include washing, cutting, and prepping vegetables, learning how to use the juicer, portioning rice for cooking, assisting with mis en place for recipes.

Level 3 “Deputy Chefs”: Open to volunteers that have completed 5 Level 2 shifts. - Tasks + skills taught include cross contamination, cutting cooked chicken to fit in to-go containers, using the scale to portion weights, etc. Following time and temp controls. Understand how to run the packaging machine. Understand how to use and clean the industrial can opener.

Level 4 “Sous Chef” Requires approval from Community kitchen Chef. - Tasks + skills taught include how to use a tilt skillet, operate tilting mechanisms, how to use paddles to move food. How to utilize Blast Chillers.

Level 5 “Chef de Cuisine” Requires approval from Community kitchen Chef. - Tasks + skills taught include how to handle raw fish and chicken, marinate, and prepare items to be cooked. Set up speed racks for roasting and or steaming.

DRESSCODE:
- Volunteers must wear long pants (ankle length), a shirt with sleeves (no tank tops or sleeveless shirts) and closed toed shoes.
- Aprons, gloves, and hairnets are provided for all volunteers. You can bring your own cap.
- NO dangly jewelry. Only plain wedding bands and medical bracelets are allowed.
- Face masks must be always worn, covering nose and mouth.
- No beverages, cellphone use, or bags are allowed in the kitchen.
- Long hair must be pulled back and completely wrapped up, braided or in a bun.
